This machine meets the unique needs of DIY leatherworkers looking for an economical, entry-level leather hobbyist sewing machine backed by top-notch features, accessories and customer support.
Does your leatherwork require uniform, perfectly even stitchwork? Are you looking for a faster alternative to hand stitching? Look no further. The Leatherwork Sewing Machine features a powerful, straight stitch walking foot sewing machine in a space-saving stationary setup.
If you’re looking for an economical way to delve into the world of leather crafting, choose the Leatherwork Sewing Machine. The machine will sew bags, belts, wallets and more! It’s ideal for crafters wanting to sew leather up to 16 oz. or 1/4-inch total thickness. You can use thread up to Tex 92 and needles up to #22 with this machine, although we recommend Tex 90 polyester thread and #20 DI Leather Needles for most applications.
Perfect for both introductory crafters and seasoned leather crafters, this machine can sew a number of materials. The Leatherwork beautifully handles the following types of leather up to 16 oz. and 1/4 inch thick:
Though designed as a leather machine, with the right presser feet, feed dogs and easy tension adjustments the Leatherwork can also sew:
We recommend this machine for anyone looking to predominantly sew leather while saving money and space with a more compact stationary footprint. The Leatherwork is a cut above the rest thanks to the following:
This machine features a compact stationary table setup for more stability and control while you work. The Leatherwork head fits snugly within its custom lacquered tabletop. The sturdy steel legs provide a lasting, secure setup, and the table’s integrated foot treadle powers the machine. With this space-saving assembly, you’ll have the perfect amount of work area for leather crafting along with the freedom to move the setup around your shop if you need to.
The strong, cast-iron Leatherwork head is exceptional in every way. The casting and internal component molds have been carefully designed by Sailrite to produce a more robust machine and ensure quality. These molds are used exclusively for our machine production, promising quality stitching and a long machine life. Both the internal and external components are made using only the highest quality materials for exceptional performance.
The Leatherwork Package includes the Sailrite® Power Plus® Balance Wheel for slow speed power and control. It enables you to sew leather and other thick assemblies at comfortably slow speeds without power loss. Our Workhorse® Servo Motor and a set of cogged belts power the machine in combination with a pulley drive system. This pulley drive system is the built-in speed reducer attached to the underside of the tabletop. Much like how a pulley system can help lift a heavy object, the pulley drive system on the Leatherwork enhances low-speed torque. The Power Plus Balance Wheel, Workhorse Servo Motor, two-belt drive system and built-in speed reducer all work together to slow down the machine for precise, controlled stitching. At the same time, these mechanisms provide immense power, allowing the machine’s needle to pierce leather effortlessly.
A Sailrite exclusive, the Workhorse Servo Motor is a 550 watt, 3/4 horsepower servo motor designed for continuous use on industrial sewing machines. This quiet, energy-saving motor features a 12 coil design, which creates smooth motor rotation and a fluid motor-to-machine power transfer. A brushless motor, the Workhorse provides high torque even from a complete stop! This servo motor also offers fully adjustable speed settings, which let you set your top sewing speed while maintaining variable speed control. Variable speed settings range from 1/2 stitch per second up to 412 stitches per minute. This motor works in conjunction with our oversized Power Plus Balance Wheel for optimal performance. Factor in the built-in speed reducer for careful, precise stitching and you have a machine ready for your next big leather project!
This patented sacrificial pin (Patent #7438009) protects your machine from damage. If you sew over something you shouldn’t, the pin will break and your machine will stop operating in order to protect the machine. Pulling the pin out also makes the machine stop working, which is an excellent additional safety feature. As an added perk, it also makes winding bobbins quick and easy. No other dedicated leather sewing machine on the market has this patented safety feature.
The Leatherwork’s interchangeable feet and feed dog give you the ability to sew a wide range of materials. The machine comes equipped with specially designed leather/delicate feet and feed dog with knurled teeth that will not mar most leatherwork. The mechanical walking presser foot works with the feed dog to pull thick layers of leather and other materials through the machine at consistent speeds for symmetrical stitching. This walking foot is ideal for tackling different layers and varying thicknesses of leather as it can climb over them with ease. This makes it incredibly versatile!
The EZ Set™ Stitch Length Plate helps to keep your stitch length consistent when switching from forward to reverse. Switching directions is made quick and easy by the spring-loaded stitch length lever. Easily maintain your stitch placement with 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch and 1-inch markings right on the needle plate.
